Grade 6

Course Description

A brief overview of the reproductive system is given. Students develop a positive attitude and appreciation for the physical, emotional and social changes they are experiencing as they approach adulthood. Sexually transmitted infections (STI) and other consequences of adolescent sexual activity are discussed. Emotional changes that can affect relationships with friends, parents and others are analyzed. Throughout the program, abstinence is advocated as a viable and preferred alternative.

Goal

Students understand the different aspects of their reproductive system and appreciate the importance of making responsible decisions.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems and the changes that occur during adolescence.
  • Recognize the relationship between the physical body and sexual feelings.
  • Name abstinence from sexual activity (including oral sex) as the only certain way to avoid pregnancy and STIs (STDs).
  • Identify the physical, social and emotional effects of sexual involvement.
  • Review additional kinds of hygiene items needed to maintain cleanliness once puberty begins.
  • Recognize the influences that affect an adolescent’s choices and behaviors.
  • Explain how hormones influence growth, development and emotional changes.
  • Recognize how emotional changes can affect relationships with friends, parents and others.
  • Recognize the power within a person to make healthy decisions regarding sexuality.
  • Identify abstinence as a viable and desirable alternative to sexual activity.
