90-Minute Program

Course Description

Cells, tissues, organs, and body systems are reviewed, with a special emphasis placed on the circulatory system. Graphics, models and a pulse meter activity help students learn the effects of stress, smoking, food choice and physical activity on the heart. Food groups, the role of fat in our diet, and fast foods are discussed using an interactive computerized module.

Goal

Students understand the function and care of the circulatory system and how this system is affected by physical activity, food choice, smoking and stress.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize different cell types and discuss the jobs they do for the body.
  • Describe the body’s structural organization from simple to complex units.
  • Discuss the basic anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system.
  • Specify smoking, physical activity, food choice, and stress as factors that can affect the circulatory system.
  • Give examples of nutritious, heart healthy snack choices.
  • Consider the food pyramid MyPyramid.gov and identify where fats and sugars are added throughout the food groups.
  • Analyze computer graphics depicting nutrient content of common foods.
  • Recognize the role of fat in proper nutrition.
  • Observe the use of energy through physical activity.
  • Briefly review ways to care for teeth and gums.
